Gundogs of Maplewood

Hey everyone! I've been gone a while and finally decided to open petz again. I wasn't 100% what my plan was getting back into petz until I seen Bex's awesome site; Hollymoor Gundogs and they inspired me to adopt a couple of Gundog pups to raise <3 I had my heart set on an English Springer Spaniel and a German Shorthair Pointer but I couldn't find the right file for an English Springer Spaniel... or I did but I was feeling too lazy to hex what I had in mind.

So.... I adopted a Sussex Spaniel instead since it's a breed I've done very little with in the past and thought it might be fun.

Introducing;

Maplewood's Little Junebug "June"

1st Gen, female, German Shorthair Pointer from the Cierra File

and

Maplewood's May Flowers "May"

1st Gen, female, Sussex Spaniel from the Cierra File

So far they get along great! We spent the day getting them settled in, re-setting up our petz house for them, and just getting to know them a little bit.













So far I've learned that they are both good mousers, though June seems to be better at it. May is terrified of water while June loves water. They both absolutely love playing tug of war with each other and sometimes they even play catch together. They will cuddle up together when tired and love to fetch things.

I am hoping to focus on them around Duke's Group as well as compete with them in trials and shows of all kinds. Mostly Gundog stuff though.

Not sure how often I'll be posting on them, but I will do my best to keep this up to date Please feel free to comment!

Awww wow, how cute, I love both so much. Both are breeds on my to get at some point list lol. I hope you have lots of fun with them, gundogs for the win.

Thank you! They are proving to be super cute and fun so far <3 I'm hoping to just focus on them for now but... I already have other breeds swimming in my mind I'd love to add at some point so we'll have to see where things take me! I'm especially excited for all of the Gundog stuff.

I've been playing with these two on and off all day! We've entered into some of the gameplay challenges which included introducing them to the cat and dog stuffies, planting one of each flower and letting them pick their favorite (I also used all of them to make a pretty vase in the family room <3 ), wearing plaid and doing something bad (June decided to play keep away with the ball), and a nighty night challenge.

I've been having fun getting to know them a little better. June is definitely more willing and eager to please while May... could often care less about anything lol.



We did some jump training and June did awesome! May on the other hand... well, her glaring at the jump pretty much sums up what she thinks of jumping anything.



We also did a practice Quarry Dash to train them for when they enter for real. They both did pretty good but June once again outshined May! June was able to catch and bring me 5 Auto Rolling balls while May only managed 3. May almost had a 4th one but June literally jumped and snatched it from in front of her!

I'm really excited to see how they do and progress with their training however... I am starting to get a little concerned that May might not have the drive I'm looking for in a Gundog. We shall see how she progresses as we work with her! I'm sure we'll find something she excels at.

Decided to give the double retrieve a go today too and see how the girls did;


June did really good and retrieved them in the right order! Her time was 00:51 seconds


May's first try didn't go good at all. She got distracted sniffing the carry case, then lay down, brought the wrong one back and tried to bury it, then just sat down licking her paws and scratching herself. After 2 minutes had gone by, I brought her inside to feed her again and decided to spray her down with the flea / tick spray and give her a little brushing to be sure nothing had attached themselves to her while we were out on the moors.

Then we went back out and tried again.


This time she was able to focus and get the job done! She retrieved them in the right order this time and got a total time of 00:43 seconds! She beat June!

We'll keep working with the girls on this, hopefully they can keep up their good scores!

Last one I think for today. After giving the girls more food and rest, I tried out the 'Round the Clock' retrieves with them. I'm not sure if I did it right, as in, I'm not sure where I can help them / not help them / how to get them to retrieve in the right order, but since it was just practice we just went for it and did our best.


June did great and scored 00:58 seconds! She retrieved them in the right order with a little help from me and I rewarded her with a treat and petting for each one she brought back.


May insisted on bringing back the one she was supposed to bring back last, back first. Then she got the other two in order. I still rewarded her with a treat and pets for bringing them to me. She scored 1:39 for her time.

Becca, maybe you could give me some pointers on this one when you have time?

All in all, we've had a fun filled day and I am looking forward to hosting some Gundog events of our own soon! Just want to get some practice in before I start hosting any!

New day which means more working with the pups! First, I'll post some stuff from last night since I did end up playing with them again.





Some play time in the backyard. Doesn't look like either of them are good at frisbee.





I also learned what their favorite color and flavors are last night by looking in their .pet files in a hex editor. These are the results!

June's favorite color is Red and her favorite flavor is Cheese!

May's favorite color is also Red and her favorite flavor is Bone! However, as you can see, she also really loves the wet food stuff (Red food bowl and Leftovers).

I was thinking about a super old Quail toy I made a LONG time ago and surprisingly I was able to find my super old website and the downloads still work so downloaded it! It's one of my favorites and it flys like the frisbee when you toss it so when your petz try to catch them you can take really fun 'Flushing' type pics!

This morning, I took the girls out to practice retrieving the bumpers.



They both did pretty good even though May tried to bury a bumper a time or two XD



Made them both very sleepy <3

Since June is excelling at just about everything, I wanted to work with May one on one for a bit. Her nose has been really bugging me since you can barely see it so I darkened it up a bit as well as made her eyelids a little darker and fixed some other weird stuff that was going on with her file.





I think she looks much better now. She also seems to really like that rope toy <3





I took out the smallest jump we have to do some jump training with her. She's still not a fan. Her favorite game is to paw it out of my hand.



After what felt like forever, we finally got a jump! I rewarded her with lots of petting and a bone treat. Then we tried again...



It didn't go well. I will keep working with her on this, but I don't see her ever being a great jumper especially if it's in a timed event.

Awww this is so cute. I kind of want to adopt a little PB gundog now haha! <3
