Though I mentioned her and showed a baby picture in my introduction of myself, I believe Pokey deserves a much more proper introduction of her own.
This, of course, is her on her day of birth, with mother Henrietta curled up with her, and father Oliver lovingly gazing upon his mate and child. It bears mentioning that Pokey was a VERY accidental baby. I had brought out her extended family and each their mates for a bit of a family reunion type thing - and forgot how madly in love Oliver and Henrietta were. I was in the nursery before it occurred to me that fixing everyone might have been a good idea before I brought them out. Oops! So on a whim, I decided to naturally raise her! Special attention for an only child, you know?
One of my favorite things about Pokey from the moment she first stood up is her right ear - it's smaller, as if bent, which I can only imagine stems from Henrietta's own father, Silvio the Alley Cat (pictured below, him and his mate Cyndi - the first two cats I ever adopted, and the patriarch and matriarch respectively, of their clan of descendants.)
Since taking those pictures of bitty Pokey, she's grown quite a bit. Yesterday, she came out on her own for the first time!
She's definitely a chunk of a cat, to the point she can't even walk without waddling, but it's honestly endearing. She can worry about diets when she's bigger; right now she's a baby who deserves to be spoiled. She's also a natural show-poser like Cyndi is, so she's possibly already shaping up for a presence in the ring down the line! It's a bit funny when you consider Henrietta HATES cameras and will happily hiss and swat whenever I take her picture! Right now, though, it's enough that she does it, without worrying too much about alignment and such. Kittens should play more than they work, after all!
Even though she CAN be out on her own, I still prefer for Mom and Dad to be with her, to teach her how to properly cat as she grows, and because I can't just rip her from her parents so quickly when she's still so tiny. If she's not with them, she'll be hanging out with her aunt or grandparents for sometime to come. Probably a good thing, too. Henrietta and Oliver may be confident and and eager to play and try new foods and meet new faces, Pokey is always hanging back and watching shyly.
I guess that's the downside of being an only child. It can be lonely when there's no one your age to play with, always just stuck following the grown-ups around while they do taxes and other boring stuff. Hmm, I suppose she really needs a friend. While she acclimates to exploring the world outside the nursery, I suppose I'll check up on some other litters I've had recently, or perhaps pay a visit to the adoption center, to see if anyone would be good to introduce her to!
