Damien trying to pay you to be brushed is amazing. xD Memory seems to be really into playing fetch? I'm glad she and hibiscus are getting along, that's a relief. And that second picture of her sunbathing is just too cute. Anxiety turning into a chicken is hilarious and weirdly fitting. "but he suddenly became a blimp again and started floating away, apparently out of control, because he sounded distressed." OH NO. That sounds terrifying, poor Anxiety. What is it with pets and oddballz sleepwalking? Just today I saw a conversation about sleepwalking pets in the DG discord and now your description of Spork doing the same thing... I've never seen it and I feel like I'm missing out! Spork's love of dancing is great. AMAZING MOVES. My memory is really bad and I'm sorry! Hibiscus looked familiar but I thought I was mixing her up with someone else's pets. It's weird that it doesn't happen more often for pets to pick the "wrong" species bowl since flavours are random! I wonder if dogs liking cat food is also related to... something? (Like cats with high dogginess.) I'll definitely start keeping an eye out to see what patterns I've noticed when they're eating. It's a real shame oddballz sound comparatively harder to hex, because that system and degree of customisation sounds incredible. Do you know of any hexing resources/tutorials for oddballs? I'd love to give it a shot but I'm bad at hex editing stuff. Now I really wish they'd have a community like Petz or Babyz do, it sounds really underrated. I'm even more impressed with your oddballz now, after knowing all the work and attention to detail that went into them! About the plant, maybe they meant them to be similar to the catnip plant? That one also gets smaller when pets eat them, though I don't remember if it grows back or not. I guess it wouldn't make sense for most in-game plants (like the flowers) to be edible, and I've always wondered why the only edible vegetable seem to be the carrots, considering bunnies are one of the species were can technically get. You're right, I wonder what they wanted to do with that functionality, if anything, because it sounds really interesting and would have been an awesome detail! that's fine, i don't think i would remember things like that either, haha yeah, i think there must be some code in place that keeps catz from commonly liking dog food unless they have dogginess, but the high-finickiness single random flavor preference must override that or something. i don't play with dogz enough to know if there's any similar trait in them, but it's possible! carolyn has a few tutorials (and the easy-edit kits, which allow you to use external LNZ instead of having to hex-edit it, although i like to use them to just edit the LNZ externally and then use a hex editor to overwrite the LNZ inside the file with that using a hex editor so i can package the eggs by themselves without the modified files being needed to play with them, plus i like to edit some of the other internal stuff that isn't editable using those like the info page and such), and there's some documentation on phantasmagoria. there's also the "egg scrambler" tool around, but it only really allows you to recolor/resize ballz and such and doesn't really allow for more advanced editing of the sections, so i didn't really bother with it much. and yeah, i think that was something we talked about, and i think it seems likely, since the eating behavior for edible plants seems to be the same as the catnip (usually just taking a few bites and then stopping, multiple petz can eat it at once, etc.) but i am really curious if there was something in the works for potential herbivorous wildz dlc, given we were apparently also supposed to get more of them (at very least ferrets were planned), but they never ended up going through with it. makes me think about what could have been! I'm relieved that you're ok with that! I'm so bad at connecting my pets' names with their looks, the petz pic factory has been a lifesaver because I'm often trying to remember what a specific pet's name was. xD I think seeing the same pet a lot helps. For example, I don't think I'd get damien mixed up with someone's pet or forget him easily! I forgot that you don't play dogz! Raffles is one of my dogs who loves the cat food but I can't see anything in his stats that might influence that, so I'll have to look at it on the other dogs.
Thank you so much for all the tips and links! I'm really excited about exploring odd balls, maybe it'll also help me learn about petz hexing. Aren't ferrets carnivorous, though? But yeah, I agree, I think they probably had plans to add more species and maybe give us more herbivorous pets... including fleshing out the rabbits, who seem kind of random in terms of the content they don't have. Was the Herbivorous Wildz DLC an actual thing that was announced? That would have been incredible! At least this feature made it into the game, so talented people (like you) can make these items.
(Sorry I'm so untalkative today, but it's way too hot and I can't words)

(Sorry I'm so untalkative today, but it's way too hot and I can't words) yeah, i think she has just enough dogginess to enjoy playing fetch, but not quite enough to do tricks, haha
i'm still not really sure what caused that, but he seemed pretty freaked out! luckily it went away after i took the picture and petted him a bit.
this is the first time i've seen it! i think the only thing i did differently than usual this time is i flipped the switch to turn the lights off for a bit while he was sleeping, and when i turned them back on, he was sleepwalking!
and no problem! i remember when i first started it took a lot of delving into things for me to figure everything out. i think my first experience with a hex editor at all was trying one of those tutorials for making trotters/tricksters, and then some playing around with catz 1, but after awhile of practice i ended up confident enough with it to experiment with other things.
and yeah, ferrets are carnivorous, but i got the impression from the plans for those and the pig that they were planning more wildz that they hadn't specifically named yet, which makes me think they may have had plans for some herbivores made to utilize that feature, which unfortunately didn't end up happening since they kind of just rushed to get the pig and bunny done and then packaged them with petz 4 (i heard there were some company/employee changes in between petz 3 and petz 4, so that probably had something to do with it). it makes me a little sad to think about what we could have gotten if they'd been able to go through with it, but i am glad that some of the functionality is still in the game!

I'm glad he calmed down, it sounds terrifying for him! (But also kind of funny.) Hmm I wonder if that was it? Maybe the game registers switching on the lights as supposed to wake them up but maybe it's glitchy? Still weird that it happens in petz, though. This kind of thing is awesome, whatever the reason is, it makes them feel so much more alive. Ha, I think that was one of my first experiences with hexing, too! The second was a vase. I'm impressed that you've been hexing since Catz 1! I only started playing and hexing stuff back in April so that kind of longevity and experience blows my mind. That makes sense (about the wildz)! It would have been so great to get some wildz, including herbivorous ones. It would have been so different. I've often wondered why the pigs and rabbits felt so lacking and that explains a lot. When I started playing P4 I thought the amount of species sounded much better than just cats and dogs and ended up being very underwhelmed. Like you say, it's a shame it didn't happen, but at least some of those features can still be rescued from the game's files. I really wish PF Magic had gone on to make more Petz games in some way, can you imagine all the things we'd probably have by this point?

well, my first game was actually petz 5, but after getting into the hexing part of the community and reading (mostly carolyn's) documentation about it, i really wanted to check out catz 1 and try to make some stuff for it, i guess to try and get a feel for how it was done before all the tools and see if there was anything special i could use that for later. it came in handy, haha!
yeah, i like to think about that sometimes. i really hope at some point we learn more about editing SCPs and such, because i think it'd be really neat to be able to use the movement styles from oddballz, since the animations for the majority of them are still in the game, and i think they'd be really neat to see wildz use!

today, memory wanted to play with the skull again. damien decided he didn't like it.
then he wanted to play with it, too, though.
and to be brushed.
after he was brushed, memory wanted to play with the brush! damien kept trying to bat it out of her mouth.
after it was put away, he played with a diamond.
memory discovered she could wrestle again. it seems to be one of her favorite things to do now!
hibiscus brought the skull to memory again, but she was a bit distracted by the clouds.
spork started flying as soon as i took him out today! at least he isn't upset today.
he did a pose when i used the camera.
he also flashed his lights again after he finished eating!
as an experiment, i decided to flip the light switch off, but he sounded a little upset, so i turned it back on after a moment. apparently, he's scared of the dark!
i took out the robo pogo, and he played with it for a bit.
he got himself so excited that he slipped and fell over.
i brought out the seismic ball for him, and he kicked it around for awhile before promptly dropping it on top of himself and exploding. i guess it's fun for him!
anxiety wanted to carry around the flavorizer for a bit when i brought it out.
he rolled over as a trick for some grubz.
unfortunately, he was too scared of the grubz to eat most of them.
when i zapped him with the transformer, he melted into a puddle! oddly, this didn't scare him, and he wanted to play more with the transformer.
he became an ant! he apparently liked this so much that after it wore off, he got the transformer back out and turned himself back into an ant for a bit.
he decided to start singing after a little while.
since he wasn't afraid of the transformer, i thought i'd see if he might like the seismic ball as much as spork seems to, but he got scared of it, so i just put it back. maybe he can try batting it around some other time!

today, memory and damien found an emerald!
memory just wanted to wrestle, though.
they also found a sapphire!
memory still wanted to wrestle.
then, damien wanted to be brushed.
and memory still wanted to wrestle.
damien is getting tired of it, i think.
memory and hibiscus decided to drink some water from the sink.
some roaches appeared in the kitchen, so they played with them.
this is why memory usually doesn't play with damien and hibiscus at the same time.
spork was nervous when he came out again today.
he started flashing his lights again. maybe trying to send an SOS signal?
i got a picture of him eating a grub this time!
too much food.
after that, he wanted to take a nap.
when he woke up, he played with the atomic ball for a bit.
he was so sad when i put it away that he shed a tear, so i brought it back out for him for a bit longer.
then, he did some dancing.
anxiety was throwing a grub around again today, but eventually he decided to eat it.
he was nervous when i first brought out the pop box, but then he started dancing and singing!
then, he wanted to play with his ball.
suddenly, the ball sparked and turned him into a blimp! this time, he just seemed to be really mad about it.
despite this, when i put the ball away, he started crying, too!
i let him play with it a bit longer. he loves his ball!

Spork exploding was a bit terrifying. And he looks weirdly cute when he's eating! Is it just me, or is Memory obsessed with wrestling?! Poor Damien. The broken heart over Anxiety's head and the picture where he's crying have emotionally ruined me, thank you. I hope Anxiety always has his ball around! I'm glad he calmed down, it sounds terrifying for him! (But also kind of funny.) Hmm I wonder if that was it? That's a really weird feature but so interesting! I finally got oddballz, now I just need to install it so I'll get to see this too I can see how it was a great education, you're one of those PC members who are waaaay ahead of everyone. Which is awesome! More knowledge about SCPs would be incredible and I didn't even know about the movements from oddballz probably being usable in petz. That would open up so many possibilities, not only wildz, but more fantastical things as well.

i always thought something like that would be painful, but he doesn't seem to mind it at all, haha
it seems like it's all she wants to do when he's out with her anymore. he might need to give up on babysitting soon, lol
it's always the first thing he goes for to get from the case! i knew they could throw tantrums when you put their toys away, but i didn't realize they could get that sad about it, too.
i always like finding things and sharing them with everyone, so i hope the resources i put up are helpful!
yeah, it turns out a ton of the oddballz animations stayed in petz, and there's certain sections that tell the game what animations to use, so once we figure out how to edit everything properly, they should be able to be used for new breeds! it's exciting to think about.

memory still keeps tackling damien every chance she gets, so he was brushed and then put away for now.
antwynn decided to come out to play! they seemed to get along well.
antwynn brought memory this doll.
i decided to take out hibiscus, to see if maybe they'd all get along.
unfortunately, antwynn started chasing hibiscus around.
memory played with the earth ball for awhile, but she stopped to stare at this picture of damien for a bit. she seemed concerned about it.
i took damien out again, and he did this.
then, he found a doubloon.
he carried the doubloon to get the brush out of the case again!
i guess he's learning new things all the time.
spork got the pop box out almost right away today! he loves to dance.
he started laughing a lot when the little toy popped out of it.
next, he wanted to play with the transformer, and he became a bird.
when i put it away, he wanted to get it back out again, so he transformed again, into a pig. he thought this was very funny, too. he must be in a good mood today!
he also ate a lot of food today, i guess probably because he's getting pretty close to being fully grown. he does look much bigger!
today, when i first used the camera, anxiety decided to do some stretch poses. he can pose just as good as any sophisto!
then, he splat himself into the wall.
he did the blimp trick again today, despite the apparent ire it's caused him.
when he saw the yellow striped grub today, a heart beamed out of his head! i guess he likes that one.
when i was taking pictures of him again, he suddenly sprouted devil horns and a little goatee, apparently in an attempt to dissuade me from taking more pictures. (it didn't work, he just looks very silly.)
then, he played with his ball for a little while.
however, he was starting to get sleepy.
suddenly, before he could fall asleep, he jumped up and ate his ball! i guess that's one way to keep me from putting it away. it made his legs disappear, though!
then, he went to sleep. (when i put him away, the ball popped out of the funnel.)

memory and hibiscus found a ruby today! hibiscus was scared of it.
memory played fetch with the ruby for a while.
hibiscus mostly just wanted to play with her doll, but she also brought a hermit crab shell to the cursor.
with some help, hibiscus got brave enough to pick up the ruby.
after memory and hibiscus were done playing, damien came out for some brushing.
he also found a hermit crab.
dizzy decided to come out and play!
it didn't end very well.
dizzy got splashed by a wave, which xe was very angry about and decided was the sky's fault.
damien didn't seem to care either way when dizzy left.
but he did want to be brushed again.
anxiety decided to fly around for a bit when he came out today!
i gave him a locopop, but he decided to bat it around for a bit first.
then he ate it, and turned lots of different colors.
i took out the seismic ball to see if he was more interested in it today, and he was alarmed by the shaking it caused!
he decided he wanted to do some dancing instead.
then, he played with his ball for a bit.
the ball turned him into a blimp again, but he didn't seem to care this time. maybe he's gotten used to it!
spork also decided to fly when he came out today!
when he was finished eating, he wanted to play fetch with the food.
he noticed me using the camera and suddenly sprouted a bow tie! i guess he wanted to look fancy for his pictures.
he played with the robo pogo again today, and had so much fun that he stayed on even after it ran out of power.
then, he decided to nap for a bit.
after he woke up, he decided to dance for a bit.
then, he played with the seismic ball again, and lost both of his eyes this time! it still didn't seem to bother him, and they went back in after a minute, but it was a bit disturbing.
