This is an amended trial show, constructive criticism and ideas are welcome. Please note I have edited the points received per stage to be more mindful of competition levels in an effort to be more fair and balanced; I understand this may be quite complicated so I will do my best to make it clear when judging. I have also slightly increased the number of entries allowed to encourage as much variety as possible.
This show follows more realistic protocols than standard pose shows. The entries will be split into breed/type rings (which will be decided based on entries) based on the Kennel Club's format (plus a mixie category).
How does it work?
First the dogs are judged against each other in the breed ring, and placements are assigned as set out below. Then the winner of each breed moves up to be judged against the winners of the other breeds in its group and they are awarded Group 1-4. Lastly the Group 1sts are judged against each other for the coveted BIS and RBIS (reserve). It is encouraged to enter a wide variety of breeds to increase both the scope and fun of the show, and increase your chances of winning!
While posing will be important in this show, how well that pose suits the dog, how well it looks overall and a bit of special "something", will play a big role in judging. I won't be judging to real standards per se, but if you're showing a long-nosed breed like a borzoi, it would be better to see that long nose in a profile pose, whereas a short-nosed bulldog would be better face on, for example. Selective breeds, due to their very nature in the PC, will need to adhere to their breed standard to be considered that breed, however.
What breed do I class my dog as?
> If it looks entirely purebred, or has the head, body, legs and feet of one breed, it will be assessed as that breed. Ears, tail and coat don't matter. If a dog doesn't technically meet the standards but is close enough, and the breed is lacking competition, I will add it to that breed.
> Generally recognised selective breeds such as tamsins and hounds may be entered under that breed. If you have your own selective breed, and you're entering at least four of that breed, enter it under your breed name with a link to the standard. Please note that SBs must adhere to their breed standards or they will be categorised under the closest other category (ie. tamsins must have mutt markings).
> If it looks like a non-poodle but poses like a poodle, it should be classed as mixed, and vice versa. If the dog is a PB poodle but is using a different SCP, they can be considered a poodle (please make a note of this).
> If unsure, put a ? where asked and I'll assign it where I think it should be.
How many placements are available?
In the breed ring, placements awarded will be:
1 entry = NC (No Competition)
2 entries = HM
3 entries = BOB
4-5 entries = BOB + RBOB
6 entries = BOB + RBOB + 1 HM
7-9 entries = BOB + RBOB + 2 HM
10-12 entries = BOB + RBOB + 3 HM
13-14 entries = BOB + RBOB + 4 HM
At 15 entries the breed will be split into 2 roughly equal (if possible) varieties, to increase chance of winning for competitors and make judging easier. These varieties will vary depending on the entries and may change between shows since entries will always vary. Varieties receive Best of Variety (BOV/RBOV) instead of BOB; these are worth the same. Only one dog from each breed will enter the group ring, unless there is not enough competition to fill the ring.
Please note that mixies are also classed as varieties (and so always receive BOV/RBOV), since by their very nature they are not a breed.
What points are awarded?
BIS - 8pts
RBIS - 7pts
BOB/RBOB/BOV/RBOV - 3pts
HM - 2pts
NC - 0pts
Placing in Group:
> If beating at least three competitors in group (ie. G1 with a full group) - + 3pts
> If beating two competitors in group - + 2pts
> If beating one competitor in group - + 1pt
> If beating a competitor to make it to G4 (ie. there are 5 or more breeds in the group) - + 1pt (this will be noted)
> If no competitors are beaten in group, no additional points are awarded regardless of placement
Placing RBIS - + 1pt
Placing BIS - + 2pts
Special notes:
> If a dog wins BIS or RBIS without any points from the breed ring and/or group ring, it will be upgraded to BOB. All BIS and RBIS winners receive the maximum points per stage to keep things fair to all competitors (3pts from BOB + 3pts from beating the winner's circle + 1 or 2pts for RBIS and BIS).
> If a dog gets to Group 1 without any points from the breed ring, and beats at least three competitors (ie. G1 in a full group), upgrade to BOB (3pts from BOB + 3pts from G1 = 6pts). All G1 winners of full groups receive the maximum points per stage to keep things fair to all competitors.
> If a dog gets to Group 2 without any points from the breed ring, and beats at least two competitors (ie. G2 in a full group), upgrade to BOB (3pts from BOB + 2pts from G2 = 5pts). All G2 winners of full groups receive the maximum points per stage to keep things fair to all competitors.
> No upgrades are available for G3 or G4, or in incomplete groups.
> No points are to be awarded if no competition is beaten in the breed or group rings.
How are mixed breeds judged?
Mixies are very different to the other groups, primarily because they aren't assigned to one irl. I considered a number of options to deal with this issue, including moving mixed breeds to the utility group (the rl catch all for breeds that don't fit anywhere else), assigning the BOV to the group it mostly resembles, and just awarding an arbitrary extra amount of points to the BOV in place of a group win. None of these quite sat right with me so I ended up deciding to make mixies a special case, but as equivalent as possible, meaning the BOV gains extra points depending on how much competition they beat:
Dogs entered | Extra points | Total points
1-4 0 0-3
5-7 1 4
8-10 2 5
11+ 3 6
To make things easier, I will count and post the total points for the winner. Please note that if the mixed breed BOV wins RBIS or BIS, it will gain the total number of 7 or 8 points just like all other entrants.
General rules:
> Dogz only. There should be no wildz or especially unrealistic hexies or unnatural colours in this show (unrealistic eye colours are ok), as it's based on realism. If in doubt, please ask
> White background, no editing
> No clothes/toyz/etc.
> Adults only in this show
> Any pose, file or direction accepted (including poodle). Skinny poses or dogs that aren't actually posing will be DQ'd
> Max of 15 entries per person (if there aren't many entries near closing I'll open this up)
> This show will close on 07/04/2023 (GMT)
